Felix Insulae (The Isle of the Blessed) 2020
Being marooned in paradise unable to leave cannot be a bad thing, can it? In the series, body parts are projected for a fraction of a second onto an alien landscape that looks a little like an archetype of paradise: a warm tropical idyll with palm trees, sandy beaches, a lotus pond, gentle waves. The projected images are sensual images that recall an omnipresent, tender and sometimes naughty goddess.
But the images are also like a virus, invisible to passers by, and they taint and transform the landscape in a way only visible to the camera. By coming to see what we revere we also destroy it with the infestation of our own presence: with developments, roads, plastic bags and waste, destruction of coral, and the wildlife. Paradise is only perfect until we open the box and ruin it by peering in.
Series consisting of 20 images, presented as LED light boxes 40 x 60 cm in aluminium frame
